Mahde wears the tatoos that are the primary decoration of a Wodaabe woman. When I first met her she showed me her collection of carved gourds and mats bound in sculptural forms known as the saga. This is often a huge assembly of objects- many of which are useless and make a large bundle to carry on the days when the nomads must move camp. But they are never left behind, for they are the symbol and pride of every Wodaabe women.
